About Invisalign

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that uses clear, removable aligners (trays) that fit over the teeth like retainers to straighten them out over a specified treatment time. They are made of a flexible thermoplastic made from SmartTrack material. Your orthodontist will use 3D computer imaging technology to create a treatment plan from the initial position of your teeth to their final desired position. A set of aligners are typically worn for 1-2 weeks at a time. The trays are manufactured so that the teeth will move in small increments. When you put a new aligner in, the tray itself is slightly straighter than your teeth are. This puts pressure on your teeth, so that over the course of the week, they will shift to match the aligner. Compliance is key, and it’s important to wear your aligners for at least 20-22 hours a day.

Invisalign aligners, like all appliances, are made to work with additional components and techniques to ensure your treatment is as efficient as possible:

• Attachments — Attachments are small, tooth-colored “bumps” made of composite filling material that are bonded to the teeth. They enable the aligners to accomplish detailed movements that would otherwise be difficult. Attachments are removed at the end of treatment.
• Buttons & Elastics — Some Invisalign patients need to wear elastics when more force is needed to move the bite into alignment. The elastics attach to buttons (small plastic or metal brackets) bonded to your teeth. Precision cuts are designed to create space in the aligner to accommodate these buttons. Sometimes, the aligner itself will have special built-in hooks acting as anchors for the elastics.
• IPR — IPR stands for Interproximal Reduction. It is a quick polishing of the tooth enamel to create space in between your teeth when crowded. Depending on the space required, it can be done using manual strips (see figure to right), or highspeed tools
